Speaking at the New York Times DealBook summit, Mark Zuckerberg voiced his opinions against Apple, showing that the company sided with Elon Musk on its control over the App Store. “Apple has chosen itself as the only company that tries to unilaterally control which apps enter a device. I don’t think this is sustainable or a good position,” Zuckerberg said in his speech.

Zuckerberg added that he sees Apple as one of its biggest competitors. Stating that there is a conflict of interest in the app store, Zuckerberg says that although Apple acts like a manager working for the good of everyone, it is a difficult balance because it also has its own strategic goals.

Zuckerberg, on the other hand, praised Google’s approach to allowing users to externally install an app if they wanted, even though it’s making this process a little more difficult now: “They’ve always allowed you to have other app stores and work directly with phone manufacturers. They also respected what we planned to do with our AR headsets.”

Last week, Elon Musk also expressed his concerns about the App Store. It’s been a target for Musk for a while, as Apple forces app developers to charge 15 to 30 percent off all in-app purchases, including subscriptions like Twitter Blue.

Zuckerberg says Elon Musk’s approach to tackling App Store policies is pretty interesting: “It’ll be very interesting to see how this turns out in terms of the approaches he’s taking. I’m guessing not everything will work, but I think some things might work.”
