Instagram is experiencing a new bribery crisis. A person who works as a content moderator on the Persian version of Instagram claimed that Iranian intelligence officials offered him a bribe. Intelligence officials demanded that the accounts of journalists critical of the Iranian government be removed.
Did Iran agree with Instagram to have the account closed?
A moderator working on Instagram deciphered the plans of Iranian intelligence officials. He said anti-Iran activists and journalists were offered money to delete their Instagram accounts. Speaking to BBC Persian, the former Instagram employee stated that bribes between “5,000 and 10,000 euros” were sought.
The latest report on the BBC dealt with the Instagram account of Masih Alinejad, an Iranian-American writer and activist. Iranian intelligence officials said that they could pay in exchange for the deactivation of Alinejad’s social media accounts. A denial came from Meta, the owner of both Iran and Instagram, on the subject.
Former Instagram moderator said, “They offered me between 5,000 and 10,000 euros to delete an account. This would happen especially after deleting Masih Alinejad.”
American journalist, critical of the Iranian government, Alinejad worked for Telus International. The US Department of Justice also claimed last year that Iranian authorities sought to cooperate with a “third country” to kidnap the journalist.
Former content moderator hasn’t neglected to blame other moderators working on Meta. He claimed to personally know some Meta employees who support the Iranian regime and receive instructions from Iran. It also stated that these employees have the right to remove “any problem-free post”.
Meta spokesperson said, “We see no evidence to support these claims. Our review teams will only remove content that violates our guidelines,” he said, but did not file a claim against the moderator.
