Zeekr, a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant Geely, made a statement about its autonomous vehicle plans. Announcing that they have developed a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, Zeekr announced that it will soon announce a vehicle with fully autonomous driving capability.

Announcing that it has started working on the production of Level 4 autonomous vehicles, Zeekr will introduce its first vehicle in 2 years. Known as the automatic driving system (ADS), Level 4 can perform all driving tasks on its own when certain conditions are met.

Zeekr will introduce its vehicle with Level 4 autonomous technology until 2024

Zeekr, which has signed an agreement with Intel’s sub-brand Mobileye, announced that the EyeQ 5 SoC will be used in the developed vehicle. Making a statement on the subject, Intel Mobileye stated that the Level 4 autonomous electric vehicle will be available in the Chinese market in 2024. Underlining that the first end-user-oriented vehicle with Level 4 technology will be realized in cooperation with Zeekr, Mobileye said, “We expect this new vehicle to be available in the global market in a short time. ” he stated.

The vehicle developed by Zeekr is estimated to be built on Geely’s SEA architecture. The companies announced that they will use the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) on different Zeekr models and they have secured the agreements accordingly.

In order to maximize the safety in the vehicle, which will have Level 4 technology, a redundant brake and steering system will be added. Under normal conditions, components such as steering and brakes are not needed in Level 4 autonomous vehicles. Zeekr will include brake and steering gear in its vehicles, since highways are not yet suitable for fully autonomous driving.

“Mobile has been a strategic partner in our mission to deliver lifestyle tools fit for a more sustainable and autonomous transportation future,” said Andy An of Zeekr. The partnership supports Zeekr and Mobileye’s shared ambitions to lead the global ADAS and autonomous vehicle (AV) industry. ” said.

Autonomous driving levels announced by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Level 0 The name given to systems where the control is completely in the driver.
Level 1 The name given to the systems in which the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) assists the driver with steering or braking/acceleration. Technologies at this level can only support one of both steering and braking/acceleration options.
Level 2 The name given to the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), where both steering and braking/acceleration can be performed simultaneously. Since it is not considered as autonomous driving, driver control is required at certain intervals.
Level 3 The name given to the automatic driving system (ADS), which can perform driving automatically in some situations. In Level 3 technologies, the system can transfer control to the driver if necessary.
Level 4 The automatic driving system (ADS) can perform all driving tasks by itself under certain conditions. Level 4 technologies do not require drivers to focus on the road.
Level 5 Level 5 autonomous driving systems, where the people in the vehicle are only passengers, perform the driving themselves regardless of the conditions. At this automatic driving system (ADS) level, there is no driver other than artificial intelligence.
