Google has long been sanctioning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since the end of March. The company imposed a penalty for deleting the video for some channels and blocked some channels in the sanctions it imposed on YouTube. In this sense, YouTube Russia sanction bill also appeared. Currently, the number of YouTube users in Russia is around 90 million. In this sense, Google held back from imposing sanctions on Russian users for a while.

How many video deletions and how many channels did YouTube block with the Russian sanction?

Clashes between Ukraine and Russia continue, though not as intensely as before. Technology companies have also taken many sanctions decisions against the occupation that Russia continues by taking the whole world against it. One of them, Google, started to impose sanctions for YouTube videos that appeal to a large user base in the country.

According to the resulting figures, YouTube has imposed a penalty of permanently deleting 70,000 videos under the Russian sanction. Again in this sense, 9 thousand YouTube channels were suspended under the sanctions. YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan made a statement on the subject.

YouTube imposed a deletion penalty on 70,000 videos as part of Russia’s actions

Accordingly, Mohan said in a statement to The Guardian that they used the company’s violence policy for this incident. Accordingly, YouTube takes precautions against broadcasts such as praising or denying major acts of violence.

In this sense, YouTube is implementing such a comprehensive video removal policy for the first time with the Russian sanction. Videos praising the occupation published in Russia are among those that have been primarily deleted. Again, videos praising Russia’s policies and affirming the occupation began to be deleted in the second stage.

During this period, important content producers emerged in Ukraine, Poland and Russia, providing information about the occupation. Accordingly, these new content producers have gained more than 40 million views on YouTube since the invasion.

So what do you think, is YouTube justified in deleting videos and suspending channels under the Russian sanction? We welcome your comments under the news and on the SDN Forum pages.
