READING NOW YouTube’s response to Twitch: YouTube Emotes are ready!

YouTube is starting to roll out its own emotes. While the platform has previously allowed individual streamers to provide their own reactions and emotes, new Twitch-like emoticons, called YouTube Emotes, will be available in YouTube commentary sections and during live chats. YouTube’s first self-reports focus on games, but more will be added over time.

Now when you open YouTube’s emoji picker you will see a list of YouTube emoticons and they will appear below a channel’s own custom emoticons. Like Twitch’s system-wide default emotes, YouTube’s emotes have specific names for autocomplete. This way, for example, you can quickly type “:cat-orange-whistling:” and automatically fill the comment with a whistling orange cat.

YouTube said in a community post, “We’re starting with emoticons created for the game, but we’re working on bringing even more emote themes in the future, so stay tuned for even more community emotes!” said.

These game emotes were created by Abelle Hayford, Guy Field, and Yujin Won. From there, we’re sure to see more YouTube expressions from independent artists in the future, with a creator focus.
