YouTube introduced the “Stories” feature in 2017, similar to what we’ve seen on other platforms. Initially called “reels”; however, the feature, which later became known as “stories”, made its debut a year later for those with a wide range of subscribers, and has been in use ever since.
However, a statement made by the company today showed that the “stories” feature on YouTube will be turned off. Accordingly, after June 26, it will not be possible to share stories on the platform.
YouTube made this decision to focus on features like Shorts
The YouTube Stories feature was only available to creators with more than 10,000 subscribers. Shares made in this way disappeared after a certain period of time, as in Instagram. But here the duration was not 24 hours, but 7 days. YouTubers were also intended to use the feature for many different purposes, such as advertising their channels, sharing news, or showing behind the scenes of their content.
However, the feature did not deliver what was expected. When we look at it today, we can see that very few content producers prefer to post stories on YouTube. Even YouTube itself chose not to talk much about the feature.
YouTube says it made this decision to focus on the TikTok-like feature Shorts and “community posts” that allow creators to quickly share posts with their followers. The platform also admits that the feature was not successful, saying that the community post and Shorts content received much more comments and likes than stories.
