YouTube has announced that it will make some changes to the TikTok-like short video format Shorts. The platform, which operates within Google, stated that clickable links can no longer be added to these videos.

Links in YouTube Shorts videos will gradually become non-clickable links starting August 31, 2023. Links can no longer be added to comments, descriptions or videos.

Links are removed from Shorts due to spam or scam risks

YouTube says it made the decision to remove links from Shorts for security reasons. In this way, it is aimed to protect users from malicious content such as spam and fraud. The company states in its statement that some Shorts links may lead to “malware, phishing or fraud-related content,” adding that the current measures are not sufficient.

YouTube also stated that it will introduce a new way for links in Shorts. This feature, which will allow content producers to more securely direct viewers to other YouTube videos, will be introduced at the end of September.

Social media links will also be removed

In addition, social media icons that users can add to their channels will be removed. The reason is that the links can be “misleading”. We can say that this change will not be welcomed. Users could use the links to advertise other social media accounts.

Let’s say that the platform adds that it will bring a safer way in this matter, which is very important for users. Links will be brought near the “Subscribe” button in an update coming August 23.
