YouTube announced that Shorts, the short video feature developed as a rival to TikTok, has achieved a record number of views. According to the data shared by the platform, Shorts videos are watched by more than 1.5 billion logged-in users every month.
YouTube Shorts broke new ground by surpassing TikTok
It turned out how much YouTube Shorts were watched. The short video feature, which was launched on YouTube less than two years ago, has managed to become popular all over the world. It has reached 1.5 billion monthly views by logged in users. This figure shows that TikTok has passed the last number of views shared.
Chinese video platform TikTok announced that it has reached 1 billion monthly users in its latest September 2021 report. We can assume that YouTube has passed TikTok, since nine months have passed since this figure and no new viewership summary has yet been presented.
Shorts videos represent users who “interact with the video at different times and places throughout the day,” according to the platform’s description. Users who watch short videos at different times of the day are directed to other videos on YouTube in longer sessions.
“Long-form content remains the best way for creators to engage deeply with their audience and develop long-term relationships. But Shorts offers an exciting new way to be part of the audience’s journey and introduce themselves and their entire portfolio to new audiences.”
YouTube also stated that the average watch time has increased, it did not say how much. However, with the popularity of the short-form video format, the topic of how watch time has increased has aroused curiosity.
YouTube also stated that it plans to integrate different categories such as long-form videos, live broadcasts, music and podcasts on the platform into Shorts in the future.
