It would not be wrong to say that China-based TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms in recent years with its short video format. This also caused other prominent media to introduce ‘vertical short video’ features. While Instagram released the ‘Reels’ feature, YouTube also came up with ‘Shorts’.

While the competition between platforms continues unabated, now a new move has come from YouTube that will make it stand out. The company has announced a new plan that will allow creators to make more money with the short videos format.

YouTube to include Shorts in Partner Program

According to the statements, ‘YouTube Shorts’ will join the YouTube Partner Program with the new year. This decision means that users who produce short videos can now earn ad revenue. The platform, which plans to get ahead of TikTok with its moves, also states that it will make it easier for manufacturers who are not eligible for the program to earn money through subscriptions, tips and product sales.

It should be added that YouTube will take a different approach to revenues from Shorts. The platform will keep 55% of the revenues from the feature, while giving 45% to content producers. This is the opposite of the policy normally applied to YouTubers. The company says some of that money will go towards music used on the platform, so creators can use whatever music they want in the library without worry.

The announcement comes 18 months after YouTube introduced Shorts. The company’s product manager, Neal Mohan, also stated in his previous statements that the feature is a long-term project to make money. The inclusion of Shorts in the Partner Program also revealed that the company is quite committed to this issue. Users who met certain conditions could earn money with the help of things like the fund previously created for Shorts. The new step has taken this situation to the next level.

The short video format continues to gain popularity rapidly. According to information from YouTube, the feature receives 30 billion views per day and reaches 1.5 billion people per month.
