Several major YouTube creators, including Linus Tech Tips, Jacksepticeye and MKBHD, have expressed disappointment at the rise in comment spam on their channels in recent weeks. The growing number of users spamming comments by impersonating these big creators also deepens the problem.

Linus Sebastian said in a video he shot on the Linus Tech Tips channel on February 1, “YouTube has a serious problem: Spam,” he continued: “From crypto scams to health supplements to free Robux, every It’s getting worse day by day.”

Marques “MKBHD” Brownlee also wrote in an April 1 YouTube video, “YouTube comment spam has been out of control for months. We see you take it to the next level. YouTube should definitely find a solution to this problem,” he said.

Actually, YouTube has many tools to combat spammy comments and automatically removes most of the spam. Using machine learning and human review, the company announced that it removed more than 950 million comments in the fourth quarter of 2021 alone. YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi said the vast majority of these removals were first detected by automated flagging systems.

However, it is clear that these systems are not sufficient to prevent heavy spam. Brownlee said that YouTube is testing a new moderation feature and that this system will work harder. It seems that YouTube also takes users’ complaints seriously. “The tactics and form of spam content are changing, and we need to tailor our measures accordingly,” Choi says.
