Google’s attempts to convert YouTube users into YouTube Premium subscribers continue. The latest example of this may have appeared in a long thread on Reddit. According to this thread, Google plans to make 4K video streaming exclusive to YouTube Premium to encourage users to purchase a Premium membership.
Redditor u/Ihatesmokealarms posted a screenshot from the YouTube app on iPhone showing the 2160p (4K) option marked “Premium” and the “Tap to upgrade” link. Some other users in the thread reported seeing similar message on their devices. However, since there are people who deny this information, the existence of such a study cannot be proven for now.
Google has yet to confirm its intention to make 4K streaming exclusive to Premium. Most likely, the company is testing this change with a limited number of users to see the public’s reaction and decide whether it’s a good idea to make 4K videos exclusive to YouTube Premium.
