A new vulnerability stated to affect AMD and Intel processors can cause your computer to slow down. The new flaw observed on both platforms opens the door for hackers to access kernel memory. How can you protect yourself from the new Retbleed execution attack affecting AMD and Intel users?
Retbleed execution attack: AMD and Intel users are in danger
Discovered by two researchers at ETH Zurich, the new chip flaw has the potential to affect millions of users. Hackers who managed to infiltrate AMD and Intel chips with an execution attack called Retbleed can even throttle the performance of the computer.
The Retbleed attack, which accesses the kernel memory and can manipulate the operating speed of the chip, gives unauthorized access to any information on the hardware. This means that threat actors not only play with your computer’s performance, but can also see encryption keys, passwords, and secret chip strings.
Researchers said they have yet to come across a computer attack. But companies that share multiple computers over cloud systems may be particularly at risk. It was also noted that the processors affected by the vulnerability are used all over the world.
It is not known which models of Retbleed, which is stated to be used to gain memory access and steal information in Intel and AMD systems, are currently unknown. However, researchers believe that on the AMD side, Zen 1, Zen 1+ and Zen 2 are affected, and on Intel, processors up to Alder Lake are in danger.
Specter and Meltdown attacks came to light a while ago. It had plagued the company by putting the data of millions of Intel users at risk. It is stated that Specter affects both Intel and Arm models. It should also be noted that Retbleed is called “Spectre v2”.
