It’s been quite some time since we last heard about the Apple ring. The issue was last mentioned in 2020, when an old patent revealed that the tech giant was trying to implement motion controls. However, this idea seems to have been discarded.
According to a new document found on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, the Apple ring will use a “round outer band” as a potential wireless control method. For example, moving the band will allow people to navigate a web page on iPhone, just like the mouse wheel.
The patent offers several block diagrams detailing some of the device’s capabilities and what its current design might be.
When we examine the document, we see that the small device can be connected to a wide variety of hardware. This includes but is not limited to iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, iMac, iPad and Macbook. You’ll also be able to control your Mac by flipping the ring a few times.
The brain of the Apple ring looks like an “electronic jewelery system” standing on top of it. For the outer band there will be a scroll ball, a touch sensor, storage space and a haptic generator. When your smartphone receives a notification, haptics will activate, causing the wearable to vibrate.
It seems that the Apple ring will have a rather small and unobtrusive design, as the ring will be worn on your finger like a cybernetic wedding ring.
