Major language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT aren’t all that smart unless you navigate them really well. You can’t expect the model to present you with a piece of written art with just a few keystrokes. Instead, you must carefully and intelligently guide the model to produce what you want.
When you ask the generative AI to write an article, all you need is to construct the words and sentences that you will use. If you’re using ChatGPT to create articles or social media posts, you need to make sure they’re really the way you wrote them.
But what can you do to make ChatGPT actually write like you do? We explain in 5 simple steps…
1. Set goals and preparations
The first thing you should do is make ChatGPT understand your writing style. Explain what you will do with the following prompt so that he is ready to receive samples: “I would like your help in creating articles for [Purpose]. Your first task will be to understand my writing style based on the examples I sent you. After that, we will create some content. When you say CONTINUE to get started, I will paste examples from my posts. I’ll paste new examples as I keep saying CONTINUE. I’ll say DONE when I’m done. At this stage, please do nothing but verify that you have saved the font style.”
Clear instructions and prompts mean ChatGPT knows when to expect more content and won’t go into content creation mode until you’re ready.
2. Add your text
When ChatGPT tells you to continue, copy and paste text from one of your articles, newsletters, books, or even emails into the input box. Choose examples that represent your writing style well, including sentence length, vocabulary, style, and format.
Press enter after pasting one of them. ChatGPT should keep saying “continue” as you add more posts. It is recommended that you send at least 3 examples of your articles, ideally at least 1000 words in total, and ideally on different topics that interest you, in the format in which you will request the latest article. You can imagine you are training a copywriter or a member of the team and want to provide a wide variety of examples to prepare them for success. Type “done” after submitting the final sample and ChatGPT will be ready for your next prompt.
3. Give your writing style a name
Although you don’t have to do this, giving your writing style a name can help you easily return to it in the future. Let ChatGPT know that’s your intention with this prompt, and ask for a summary to make sure it understands your style in enough detail: “Great. Let’s call it ‘[font name] font style’. First, can you summarize your [font name] writing style in a few bullet points? Focus on sentence structure, tone and voice.”
Following such a prompt, he should send you a detailed assessment of your style. Read these items and decide if they are correct. If not, tell ChatGPT that you will give more examples and it should say “keep going” until you say “done”. If you are satisfied with the summary, proceed to the next part of the prompt.
4. Specify what you want
Now the program knows how to write; Tell him what you want him to write. Do this by giving context and clear instructions on what needs to be produced. Start the next prompt by saying “thanks” and then explain what you want to achieve.
Describe your requirements in as much detail as possible and specify exactly what you want. After giving context, specify the text you want and refer to your writing style. For example, “Can you create one of these for me using the font style [font name]? Please use this topic: [the topic you want to write about]”. You should include all the necessary information in your subject description. If you want the article to include a specific story, dates, facts, or anything else, these need to be specified. Explain what should be included in a list and ChatGPT will convert it to prose as needed.
5. Request an edit
The first text created may not quite meet what you want, but you will have created an important outline to work on. Now you need to fine-tune this sketch further to make it fit your purpose. Once you’re sure of what you want, send your prompt clearly stating what you want, such as longer sentences or less use of adverbs. This is the step where you need to ensure that the final text looks the way you want it to, by further guiding with each new prompt, and specifying the phrases or words you want changed if necessary.
Keep improving until you are satisfied with the results…
