The military action statement made by Russia towards the end of February had heightened the long-standing Russia-Ukraine tension and officially started the war. As it is known, this situation had great repercussions all over the world, causing many countries and giant companies to impose sanctions on Russia, which occupied Ukraine.
The European Union (EU) was also one of those who applied sanctions. In the statements made in the past days, the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU countries would act jointly against Russia and stated that the Kremlin would be held responsible for this situation and announced that sanctions would be applied in many areas from finance to transportation. Now, within the scope of these sanctions, a move has been made against a famous Russian billionaire.
Russian billionaire Aleksey Mordashov’s yacht was seized
According to reports, Italy has paid a deal to oligarch Aleksey Mordashov, who is known for his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin. 65 meters long luxury yacht named ‘Lady M’ was confiscated while it was in Imperia. It was stated that the reason for the confiscation of this yacht, which was reported to be worth 27 million dollars, was that Mardashov was on the EU’s sanctions list.
According to Forbes, Mordashov is among Russia’s richest business people with a net worth of $29.1 billion. The famous businessman, who made statements about the sanctions in the past days, stated that he was quite surprised about the EU’s being included in the sanctions list, that he was not close to politics and that he did not want people to die by taking a stance against war. Additionally, Mordashov resigned from the board of directors of the giant tourism company TUI Group, of which he is the largest shareholder, this week due to the sanctions.
According to Reuters, Italian media also reported that Mordashov has a villa on the island of Sardinia worth 72 million dollars. However, it was stated that it is not known whether this property will be confiscated. In addition, Italian officials, who said that EU sanctions have begun to be implemented, stated that they are preparing to confiscate 140 million euros of assets against Russian oligarchs in a statement they made in the evening.
