Under-display fingerprint scanners have taken a prominent place in the flagship Android market since 2018. However, technology has not made much progress, as it is a bit difficult to innovate in this field. A fingerprint scanner patent was recently filed by Xiaomi.
Xiaomi has announced that it has patented the technology of scanning fingerprints from all over the screen. This is good news for the end user. Because you no longer have to try many times to unlock your phone. At this point, you are not prompted to correctly place your finger on the under-display fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi maps fingerprint with infrared light data
Xiaomi has showcased how the technology will work by having some infrared LED light underneath the capacitive touchscreen layer and above the regular AMOLED display. First, when the user wants to scan the fingerprint on the screen, he touches the screen with his finger and the capacitive touch screen records the position and shape of the fingertip. Then infrared LED lights emit light from the screen.
Infrared light is reflected back after contact with fingertip. Then it reaches the light receptors. Infrared light data is used to map the fingerprint. Then it compares whether the user is the same as the saved one. If it is the same, the phone’s screen is turned on from anywhere on the screen.
Huawei filed the patent of its own full-screen fingerprint technology in six markets in August 2020, namely China, Europe, USA, Japan, Korea and India. Still, the technology resulting from supply investments for the company has yet to be clarified. There are expectations that Xiaomi will soon bring this technology to the smartphone market. However, there is no information about the time yet.
