The year 2021, when both PS5 and Xbox Series X celebrated their first anniversary in the market, was quite exciting and active. But on the Xbox side, we may be slowly coming to the end of the road for Xbox Live Gold, the monthly subscription program that comes with Xbox Live. For Microsoft, which has turned all its focus to Xbox and PC Game Pass subscription systems, 2022 may be the year Live Gold is shelved.
End of the road for Xbox Live Gold
The subscription system, called Games with Gold, was first introduced with the Xbox 360. The system, which was presented to users in July 2013 and Xbox 360 subscribers were given two games each month, offered a very economical and useful solution for a long time.
On the other hand, the Game Pass system, which was introduced by Microsoft in 2017 and created a huge explosion around the world, was taken into the background. Although Microsoft brings exclusive and AAA quality productions to Game Pass every month, Xbox Live Gold’s popularity has decreased day by day as it gives quite ordinary productions to Games with Gold subscribers.
Like any other video game subscription service, Xbox Games with Gold had its ups and downs in 2021. Xbox owners got titles like Resident Evil and Gears of War 5, which Microsoft released in January and February in early 2021.
However, in September, October and November, very positive feedback was received from fans thanks to Zone of the Enders: HD Collection, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and many other free games. However, the players were not very pleased with the Xbox 360 and Xbox One games being given away almost every month during the rest of the year.
According to the news from sources close to Microsoft, the company is preparing to unplug Xbox Live Gold and include it in the Game Pass system in a certain period of 2022. Finally, Microsoft, which admitted that Live Gold will be put out of circulation at some point last August, will thus gather all subscription systems under a single roof.
