X, or Twitter, as it was formerly known, announced that all political ads on the platform were banned globally in 2019, when Jack Dorsey was CEO, making an important decision about ads. In the statement you can find here, Dorsey stated that it is not right to pay for political messages to be delivered, and that it could lead to negative consequences.
However, a blog post shared by X, who is currently under the management of Elon Musk, showed that this ban will be lifted. According to the statement, political ads will be allowed on the platform again.
Ads with false information will not be allowed
X announced in its blog post that it will allow political ads, starting first in the United States. The company stated that the decision was taken because of Musk’s “devotion to freedom of expression” that he has repeatedly expressed.
The social media giant said that it will continue to implement certain policies for political ads even if the ban is lifted, and emphasized that some measures will be taken. These measures include banning false or misleading content aimed at undermining public confidence in elections.
In addition, X stated that it will establish a global transparency center on advertisements. This app will allow anyone to review political posts and ensure that only eligible groups can advertise.
