Recently, it was noticed that some links could not be shared on the X platform. In particular, the blocking of connections related to the encrypted messaging application pointed out. So why did X make such a decision? Here are the details…
Why does X prevent Signal connections?
The Social Media Platform, owned by Elon Musk, started to block the connections of the popular encrypted messaging application Signal. Users receive an error message when they try to share connections with “Signal.me” extension in both shipments and direct messages. Moreover, those who want to click on the Signal links in the old shares also encounter the warning “This connection may be harmful”.

There has not yet been an official statement from the platform on the subject. However, the X also warns users trying to add signal link to the biography section that this connection contains “malicious software”. The interesting point is that while the signal links are blocked, there is no problem in sharing the signal user names. So the X seems to have targeted direct platform connections.

Some experts argue that X may have relations with the government behind this blocking. Allegedly, some government employees who are expelled from the company led by Musk are using signal to share information with journalists anonymously. This strengthens allegations that the platform can be political reasons behind the signal links.
This is not the first time that X makes such an intervention on competitor platforms. In 2020, connections with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Mastodon were temporarily blocked. At that time, Elon Musk announced that competing platforms did not want to “make free advertising üzerinde through X. However, these obstacles were removed on the reactions.

Signal is especially known as an important communication tool for journalists, activists and government officials. The application has a great reputation in maintaining users’ privacy with its end -to -end encryption and security measures. However, X’s last move brought new debates on the platform’s freedom of expression and its attitude towards user privacy.
