X, formerly known as Twitter and owned by Elon Musk, has decided to expand the amount of data it collects about users. X, which constantly comes with new features, is using a feature that will worry its users this time. The social media giant recently updated its privacy policy to include privileges for “biometric information” and “work history.”

X will collect employment history and biometric data

“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for security, safety and identification purposes,” the updated privacy policy states. No details are given about what kind of biometric information this information contains or how X plans to collect it. Usually, biometric data includes fingerprints, iris patterns or facial identification.

However, last July, X was the subject of a lawsuit in the US over alleged violations of the Biometric Information Privacy Act. The lawsuit alleges that X “did not adequately inform individuals” that it “collects and/or stores biometric identifiers in every photo containing a face” uploaded to the platform. So X may be collecting information before that.

In addition, biometric data is also used to enable passwordless login. According to findings from app developer Steve Moser, X plans to introduce support for passkeys that can use your device’s fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN to log into your account.

The updated privacy policy states that X may also collect “your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills, abilities, and job search activity.” It’s probably about job search features that X owner Elon Musk hints will include. The platform rolled out a beta version of a recruiting feature for companies last week, and it also plans to add “no phone number required” video and voice calls. Finally, the updated X privacy policy will go into effect on September 29, 2023.
