The world’s largest offshore wind turbine has set a new world record for electricity generation by a single wind turbine in a 24-hour period. The record set in the past weeks was thus broken in a short time. By the way, let us underline that the new record was achieved during a typhoon.

New world record passed to Goldwind

The GWH252-16MW smart wind turbine by Goldwind is simply enormous. The turbine has a rotor diameter of 252 meters and a swept area of approximately 50,000 square meters. This area corresponds to seven football fields. The hub of the turbine is 146 meters high, approximately the size of a 50-storey building.

The 16 MW wind turbine was installed at the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm in southeastern China in June and became operational on July 19. The development of this farm is carried out by the state-owned energy company China Three Gorges (CTG). According to CTG, on September 1, the 16 MW wind turbine encountered a peak wind speed of approximately 85 km/h and 23.56 meters per second in the face of Typhoon Haikui.

Normally, wind turbines automatically lock their blades to prevent overload when wind speed exceeds 25 meters per second and cut off production during storms. However, Goldwind’s smart unit can continue to produce electricity by adjusting its blades in real time. Thus, the turbine produced 384.1 megawatt-hours of electricity in just 24 hours. This amount is enough to power 170,000 homes. This also represents a record for electricity production by a single wind turbine in a single day.

About two weeks ago, this world record belonged to Danish wind giant Vestas. Vestas’ V236-15.0 MW prototype produced 363 megawatt-hours of power in 24 hours.
