Explorers have found the world’s deepest shipwreck ever described. The destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts, known as “Sammy B” and sunk off Samar in the Philippine Sea on October 25, 1944, is at a depth of 6895 meters.
Sammy B was the deepest wreck discovered
The destroyer ship Sammy B of the US Navy was sunk during the Second World War. In the new study carried out in the past days, the wreckage of the sunken ship was found. The ship was seen to have split into two parts.
The wreckage, located at a depth of 6895 meters, was found by a submarine that went to a depth of 7 thousand meters. The ship was carrying 224 crew before it was sunk.
The destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts, the world’s deepest shipwreck, took first place, replacing the deepest sunken USS Johnston previously identified and studied. Discovered last year by the same team that found Sammy B, the ship is at a depth of 6,469 meters.
