While the Russia-Ukraine war continues, this tension continues in many different areas. Energy production is one of the issues negatively affected by the war. Nuclear power plants in Ukraine are also shut down one by one due to the dangers that arise.

Ukraine stopped another nuclear reactor!

Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been reconnected to Ukraine’s electricity grid. However, while the war in the region continued, it was decided to close the last operational reactor of the plant in order to avoid a possible radiation disaster.

The six-reactor Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost its external power source a week ago after all power lines were disconnected due to bombardment. The last reactor of the plant, which had been operating in “island mode” for several days, was generating electricity for important cooling systems.

This operating system was considered highly dangerous, as it could potentially damage important equipment, including the power plant’s turbines and pumps. On Saturday, with electricity reaching the nuclear power plant from outside, experts decided to shut down the last reactor as well.

It was stated that with the electricity reaching the nuclear power plant again, it is no longer necessary to operate the reactor for the safety of the power plant and to operate the other systems. It is stated that after this development, the power unit no. 6 of the power plant was shut down and brought to the safest state.

However, it is worth noting that the danger has not passed yet. It is underlined that if the external power is cut again, the generators must be running to keep the plant’s reactors cool and prevent nuclear meltdown. Officials at the facility announced that they only had 10 days’ worth of fuel for the generator.

We do not know how long the Russia-Ukraine war will last, but the war is gaining a different dimension with each passing day. We hope that the war between Russia and Ukraine will not result in any nuclear disaster. So what do you think about the Russia-Ukraine war? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
