How is Starlink speed?
Belgian and Italian researchers conducted analyzes over a period of about 5 months to test the latency rates of the Starlink service. The tests carried out at the German and Dutch points are divided into 3 scenarios. The results are analyzed in 3 scenarios where the network is empty, 100MB of traffic, and real-time video traffic.
When the network is idle, the delay ranges from 46ms-52ms, while it can drop down to 20ms momentarily. Average latency is 95ms in 100MB scenario and 50ms in video traffic. Thus, the maximum 80ms delay limit required by the Nvidia GeForce NOW service is met.
It is stated that these values are higher in the first months of the year, but they have improved in the last months. In this process, supporting Starlink service with new satellites and updating the system is the biggest factor. Also, proximity to ports is very important. At Singapore and San Francisco points, the delay can reach up to 270ms.
On the other hand, it is stated that browsing on websites is close to cable internet, and there are no bandwidth restrictions on content platforms such as Netflix and YouTube. In addition, it was noted that there is no performance-enhancing proxy application to solve high latency problems. Finally, it is stated that packet loss, which causes events such as freezing in video conferences, is also experienced from time to time.
