It looks like Windows’ monopoly in the US desktop market is coming to an end. According to Statcounter, the Windows operating system has not been able to withstand the growth of macOS and Chrome OS in recent years.

In February 2023, the market share of Windows in the USA fell to the lowest level in history with 57.37%. The highest share was seen in January 2009 with 92.37%. If the decline continues, Windows could lose more than half of its market share in the country by 2023.

Other operating systems have the following market shares as of February 2023: macOS 29.62%, Chrome OS 7.47%, Linux 2.55%, other operating systems 2.97%.

Apple products are in demand

The growth of macOS is most likely due to the release of Apple’s Silicon processors, which can offer users good performance and excellent battery life. This led to a huge wave of transitions from Windows laptops to Apple products.

As for the rise in popularity of Chrome OS, about a decade ago, Chromebooks began to be heavily promoted in US preschool, elementary, and middle schools. Thus, a generation has grown up knowing Chromebooks better than Windows devices. A second reason to buy a Chromebook is that they’re cheap.
