According to the report prepared by BloombergNEF (BNEF), more than 10 percent of the total electricity produced in 2021 was met by wind and solar energy for the first time. While this is clearly hopeful news for our planet, there are some downsides as well.
Although the rise in renewable energy is very important, according to the 2022 Energy Transformation Trends report, it has been observed that coal-fired and high-carbon emission power plants have increased in addition to the general electricity demand, along with the movements of the states to stimulate the economy after the pandemic.

Giant step for renewable energy
10.5 percent of the total 3000 terawatt hours of electricity produced in 2021 is generated by the combination of wind and solar. The contribution of solar-based energy to total energy demand rose to 3.7 percent, while wind energy raised the bar to 6.8 percent. Compared to ten years ago, solar and wind energy combined met less than 1 percent of demand.
In general, 39 percent of the electricity produced worldwide in 2021 was carbon-free. Hydro and nuclear energy met more than a quarter of the world’s electricity demand.
Most of the new power plants installed are renewable.
Most of the new facilities that have joined the global energy grids since 2017 are wind and solar powered. Electricity from both of these energy sources accounts for three-quarters of the newly created 364 gigawatts of capacity. The main reason for the increase in the transition to renewable energy is that the cost advantage is now on this side.
