It is claimed that the launch of Windows 12 is planned to be held in 2024, and according to a new source, these rumors are indeed true. Taiwanese Commercial Times (CTEE) reported that Microsoft will launch Windows 12 with various AI-based computers in June 2024. Plus, this falls very close to Computex 2024.

Although no direct quotes are provided, the publication attributes this to statements made by Quanta Chairman Lin Baili and Acer Chairman and CEO Chen Junsheng at the recent Taiwan Medical Technology Expo. While you may be familiar with Acer as it is a very popular computer manufacturer in many parts of the world, Quanta Computer is headquartered in Taiwan and produces computers such as laptops, as well as other electronic hardware. It also makes sense that this news would come from a place like Taiwan, as this region in Southeast Asia is full of such activities involving the production and assembly of computer parts hardware.

In addition to Quanta and Acer, a senior Intel executive earlier this year also said a “Windows refresh” was expected in 2024, but did not clearly state whether this was a feature update for Windows 12 or Windows 11.

Talking about artificial intelligence-based computers with Windows 12 also makes sense since Microsoft has recently doubled down on artificial intelligence features such as Copilot. Although not mentioned in the news, there is a high probability that systems with special artificial intelligence accelerator hardware will be recommended by hardware partners.

If you remember, Microsoft attended AMD’s CES 2023 event earlier this year, supporting and discussing the advantages of such hardware. Therefore, such a proposal does not seem too far off. But since the vast majority of PCs today lack both AMD’s Ryzen AI technology and Intel’s NPU (neural processing unit)/VPU (display processing unit), it’s unlikely that this type of hardware will become the minimum system requirement.
