Everyone is more or less confident that electric cars are the future of the automotive industry. Companies have been making their plans for electric cars for years. Each new line of electric cars comes with a new name and retires old series.
Golf, one of Volkswagen’s most iconic and popular series, has been on the road for many years as a vehicle with internal combustion engines. When asked whether an electric car would retire the brand, Volkswagen COO Thomas Schafer answered.
Golf will remain
Volkswagen COO Thomas Schafer told AutoCar that the eighth-generation Golf models will hit the market in the 2027-2028 period, while the ‘Golf’ name will remain unchanged in the new, all-electric model. Electric Golf models will be the ninth generation of the brand. In other words, the electric Volkswagen ID.3 will not replace the Golf series, as rumored.
According to Schaffer, the new ID.3 will be a top-of-the-line Golf rather than a successor to the Golf, and will be a hatchback model that will be positioned between the electric Golf – or ID.Golf – as the COO has given alternative names – between the ID.2 and ID.3.
In the past, Volkswagen introduced the electric eGolf model, but the vehicle did not attract much attention at that time. With the increasing interest in electric vehicles, the selling price of some later VW models exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended selling price.
It is wondered what kind of path Volkswagen will follow for electric cars in the future. Finally, in an e-mail sent to its employees, the company stated that the construction of the new Trinity Electric Vehicle production center had begun to be reevaluated. Without a new facility, it seems very difficult for Volkswagen to be strong enough in the growing electric automotive market.
