READING NOW Why shouldn’t you charge your smartphone with its case?

Many smartphones are powered by lithium-ion batteries, and these batteries degrade over time no matter how you charge your phone. This is because they function by shifting charge carriers between the electrodes, acting less efficiently over time as the component parts are stressed in doing so.

Charging your phone for too long or waiting for the battery to completely run out before charging (i.e. charging from 0) are great ways to strain the electrodes and shorten the life of your smartphone’s battery. However, perhaps one of the most effective ways to kill a battery is to let it overheat.

If you are using your phone with a case, it may be a good choice to remove the case while charging so that you can use your phone for longer periods of time. Because while the phone is charging, it heats up a little more than normal, and the case keeps this heat around the phone, effectively damaging the battery over time. In other words, it prevents proper heat dissipation.

If your phone feels significantly warmer after charging it, this may be a sign that it is getting too hot and is damaging the battery capacity. If you don’t feel the heat then it’s fine. However, this does not mean that the battery will not be damaged in the future.
