The person who named a rectangular structure a “circle” must have the same mentality as the person who “sliced a round pizza into triangles and put it in a square box”. Who knows how many people have thought about this issue for centuries! So, let’s answer this mysterious question that makes people say “I wonder why” as soon as possible and satisfy their curiosity.

First of all, let’s take a look at the definitions of the word that came into our language from “dāʾire” in Arabic:
1. Each of the parts of a building used as a residence, floor.
2. Each of the organizations charged with translating certain government affairs.
3. The structure in which these organizations operate.
4. A part of a structure or ship devoted to a particular job.
5. A certain limit and measure in abstract concepts.
6. The plane segment inside a circle.
7. Tambourine for strumming in saz set.

There are different theories about the subject, we said. The first of these is that the houses of the Turks in the old times were in the form of a circle.

The shape of the big tents called otağ in the Principalities period was indeed “circle”. It may be a habit inherited from our ancestors, but since we know that the word has passed from Arabic to our language, this possibility remains weak. Because before meeting with Arabs and Islam, Turks were staying in these tents. In addition, there is no certain information about whether the word “circle” was first used in a geometric sense or for living space.

When we examine the root of this word from Arabic, we find a more likely answer to the answer to the question.

The Arabic version of “circle” is “dar”. It is derived from the root “dev” meaning “to turn around, to come to the point where it moves”. The meaning of “dar” in Arabic is “great dwelling, mansion, city, homeland, homeland and country”. Its plural form is “land”. “Dâreyn” means “the world and the hereafter”.

The word “dârül” is also derived from “dar”, meaning “place to stay”. It is used in building names such as Darülaceze (the building where people in need of care are accommodated), Darülfünun (university).

So, is there a relationship between the word circle used in the sense of “the place where a human cluster lives” and the word circle in geometry?

The word also has uses such as “tax office”, “state office”. It means “separated from the outside world in a certain way”. In geometry, the boundary of the circle is the circle, the “filled” part inside is called the circle itself.

It may also have started to be used to mean “the family is administered”, “the taxes are administered”, since it also comes from the same root as the word “administration”.
