If you prefer a clear case to avoid making the design of your phone completely out of sight, you may have noticed that over time, the clear plastic turns a dirty yellow. While this change is annoying, the truth is that the plastic used to make these cases is actually yellow. But manufacturers add a blue tint so that the caps are transparent.

hue; the sheath disappears when exposed to ultraviolet light, natural oils and sweat from the human body, revealing the original color. However, this irritating hue can be recycled into its transparent form.

Why does a transparent case turn yellow?

Most clear smartphone cases are designed using silicone, acrylic, or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). All three of these are durable and can withstand high temperatures that can increase with smartphone use. However, Ecmco Industrial Plastics states that American-made acrylic turns yellow in sunlight.

Polycarbonate is a type of TPU that is more shatter-resistant than acrylic, which is a more preferred material for manufacturers. This material begins to turn yellow due to an oxidation reaction triggered when acrylic and silicone are exposed to UV light. A similar reaction occurs with sweat and oil.

How to clean the yellowed cover?

The simplest and most affordable solution in this regard; mixing a few drops of dish soap with warm water and gently brushing the cover with a toothbrush. But make sure you get into all the little grooves and nicks inside and out. Finally, rinse the cover and dry it with a soft cloth. You can let it air dry for about an hour. And if possible, you should repeat this process once or twice a week.

You can also do this using baking soda, but apply the powder to the case dry. When you’re done, rinse the cover and dry it with a soft cloth. Be sure to let it dry before attaching it to your phone.

Another method is alcohol. Pour the alcohol into a spray bottle and spray it over the case using the bottle. Alternatively, you can use a cloth dipped in alcohol if you prefer. After the exterior and interior are thoroughly wet, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe off the alcohol. When you’re done, let it dry for about an hour.

Finally, another tip, called the ‘Grandma recipe’, is made with a mixture of baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar. First mix baking soda and lemon juice to make a paste and apply to the case with a toothbrush, then mix it with vinegar in a bowl. Likewise, let it sit for about an hour and then rinse it off.
