In fact, it is very strange that an act that takes place between two people and that is based on consent can also concern people other than them and lead to major events as a result.

So why, as humanity, are we so curious about the sexual lives of others? How can such actions affect us all?

For example, Berlusconi’s scandals are still being talked about.

Remember Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister of Italy. “Bunga Bunga” parties and sex scandals had occupied the country’s agenda for a very long time, and nothing else was talked about. Why do the things that people experience in their private lives have such a big impact on the public and the decisions to be made?

The actions of the people we position above have a greater impact.

As humanity; we tend to idolize, heroize, and place some above. We do this especially to people who have power in their hands, such as politicians and artists.

We see them as if their divine thrones were damaged and they were not as perfect as they used to be, in the slightest movement that seems wrong or out of the norm to us. Sexuality, too, can have quite serious consequences, as it is a phenomenon that has sparked much debate on morality since ancient times.

We judge other people’s sex lives by their social status.

According to researches, our level of judging someone according to their sexual life; It also varies considerably according to gender, sexual orientation and moral norms. For example, if the person who comes up with sexuality is an LGBTI+ member, he or she may be subject to much more backlash. If she is a woman, she is also more the target of lynching campaigns and hate speech than a man.

In men, on the other hand, they are judged on moral norms when factors such as marriage are involved, not because of their male identity. Many of us laugh or are embarrassed, especially when it comes to politicians.

When people go out of their roles in society, they make more noise than others.

Politicians reflect an authority and trust. We see them as a kind of “leader” and feel awkward when we see them outside of their public role as politicians.

There are some features we expect from them. For example; such as honesty and self-control. If they have relationships with others other than their spouse, it is perceived as “betrayal of a deal”, thereby breaking honesty and trust.

Also, politicians face more instigators than the average person. Special interest groups, promises, money… If it loses its self-control and becomes tempted by other factors, things can get messy. Sexuality can also be seen as a kind of “loss of self-control,” which makes that person powerless.

Their attitudes in their private lives also infect their other social roles.

From politicians; we expect them not to put their ideals above the interests of society, to give us confidence and to get things done for us.

Actually, these features are; It is the same with the expectations from a “good father, a good husband, a good partner” in the traditional family structure. In other words, an attitude that can undermine their roles in their private lives can also undermine their other social roles.
