Netflix canceled the ambitious series 1899 after just one season. Fans of the mystery-horror series, on the other hand, do not seem happy with this decision.
Producer Baran bo Odar announced on Instagram that Netflix has chosen not to renew 1899 for a second season, which is about a group of immigrants traveling on a ship from England to New York. The statement reads: “As many of you know… 1899 will not be renewed for seasons 2 and 3… This fact has really ruined us all. Thank you all for watching.”

The decision came six weeks after 1899 went on the air. The series has reportedly been watched 257.2 million hours since its launch on November 17, 2022.
Set in 1899, the series is about a group of passengers on a steamship called Kerberos. On their journey to New York, Kerberos encounters the Prometheus, a ship that mysteriously disappeared months ago and sets in motion a surreal and terrifying chain of events.
Fans were understandably upset by Netflix’s decision to cancel the series. In the hours following Bo Odar’s statement, fans took to social media and called Netflix executives to reverse their decision with the hashtag #save1899. Others have filed a Change.org petition asking Netflix to greenlight two more seasons to unravel the plot. But unfortunately all these efforts will probably fail. There have been numerous canceled Netflix productions over the past few years, and the streaming giant has yet to give in to the public.

WHY CANCELED NETFLIX 1899?
So, what is behind this cancellation decision? Independent Cultural Correspondent Jacob Stolworthy wrote an article on November 28, 2022 that Netflix might cancel the series.
“Odar and Friese admitted that they don’t plan to reveal many answers until the third and final season. But that will happen if enough people watch the series. If 1899 isn’t considered a big enough hit for the broadcaster, you can bet Netflix will take that ax off,” the article said.
He described the difficulties faced by 1899 as follows:
What doesn’t make 1899’s job any easier is the fact that it is the most expensive German-made series of all time and that Netflix paid 48 million euros out of its 60 million euro budget. In other words, Netflix needs to top the Top 10 list in the world; At the time of this writing, 1899 comes after the last season of The Crown in both the UK and US, and is number one in only 25 of the 93 territories.
