Why Can’t We Go Back to Sleep When We Jump from the Couch to the Bed?

As soon as we come home after a tiring work day or when the end of the day is approaching, we turn on the TV and lie on the sofa and want to relieve our tiredness. Later, when we realize that we are suffocating, we get up and go to bed, but our sleep is already broken. So what could be causing this?

Although sleeping in a place other than our bed gives us pleasure from time to time, this actually causes us to move away from the bedroom, which is our main sleeping area, and when we go to bed, we cannot fall into the sleep we desire.

At this point, let’s look at the mistakes we made and how we can have a better quality sleep pattern.

People with sleep problems often unknowingly acquire bad habits that make it difficult to rest.

For example, these people think that sleeping somewhere other than their bed helps them fall asleep faster, but this is a false belief and has no basis. For this reason, people get into the habit of sleeping in a different place from their beds, especially their sofas.

Basically, our behavior stems from the way our brain forms habits.

For example, if a person gets into the habit of eating lunch or dinner very early in time, they will get hungry much sooner. In fact, the same is true for sleep.

If a person repeatedly falls asleep on the couch before going to bed, the brain thinks it’s time to sleep, being in a still and comfortable place. Also, if you get used to sleeping somewhere other than the bed on consecutive days, your brain will adopt that area as the main sleeping place.

At this point, it is very important with what thoughts we go to bed.

As soon as we go to bed, if we pick up the phone, turn on the TV or do not get rid of the thoughts that bother us during the day and do not condition ourselves to sleep; our brain begins to see the bed as a place of activity, and even the foot of sleep cannot be read.

Moreover, the longer this cycle gets, the harder it is to break. At the same time, our body needs darkness to fall asleep easily, but exposure to artificial light, even for a short time, poses a threat to our body’s biological clock.

Our internal biological clock traces back to our body’s circadian rhythms.

Television and electronics disrupt these rhythms by emitting the same blue light as the Sun, and actually suppress the production of melatonin, a chemical that helps our bodies sleep.
In other words, watching TV for hours on the sofa or making phone calls at night activates our brain when we need to rest, and our biological clock is turned upside down.

In summary, in order to sleep comfortably when we go to bed, it is necessary to adopt the bed as an area where only the act of sleeping will take place.

Experts have a few recommendations for us to fall asleep as soon as we go to bed.

Regardless of what happens after dinner, only relaxing activities should be done and cell phones or similar computer and television screens should be avoided.

Reading any book before bed is the perfect way to calm the mind before sleep. Those who do not enjoy reading books can also listen to an audiobook or podcast.

In addition, experts recommend that we try to fall asleep for a maximum of 15 minutes. If we don’t fall asleep within 15 minutes, he recommends getting out of bed for a while and doing activities that give us pleasure, and then going back to bed.
