LGBTI+ individuals, like many other minority groups, are ostracized by the society due to their orientation and existence and are exposed to many ill-treatments.

We can understand these examples of exclusion from many events in history. It was one of these events that gave Pride the name Pride. It was the last straw for gay communities and the rebellion had begun.

60-70 years ago, those who hide their sexual orientation or identity came together in certain places.

In the 1950s and 1960s, compared to today, there were very few places where people could go and feel safe if they were afraid that something would happen to them if they spoke openly about their sexual identity. The owners of these places were also usually homosexual.

The police, who learned that LGBTI+ individuals gathered in certain places, frequently raided the bars. One day, it was the last straw.

On June 28, 1969, there was a gay bar called “Stonewall Inn” in New York. The police raided the bar that day and tried to force the people inside to get them out. As people resisted not to come out, an atmosphere of mutual fighting emerged. This resistance was a revolt of LGBTI+ individuals who were fed up with this treatment and harassment for years.

Seeing the police using brute force, people quickly began to gather around the bar. Eventually they imprisoned the police in the bar and a riot started that lasted for 3 days. Protests were held, politicians came together and the world’s first “Pride March” began.

One of the homosexuals involved in the events describes that day with these words:

“It was as if everything that had accumulated over the years had reached its peak in a single moment and in one place. “Everything was united. We were just trying to discover freedom in places like this by turning inward. For the first time that day, we were able to show that we wanted freedom by turning outward. For the first time that day, we were not going to be crushed by them and succumb to tyranny.”

The name “Honor” comes from the nickname of an activist who organized the march.

The name “Honor” to the march comes from Brenda Howard, a bisexual activist nicknamed “Mother of Pride”, who organized the Pride Parade. Stonewall Inn is a nightclub that still makes a sound today, and its surroundings also serve as a national monument.

“We are proud of our existence.”

The fact that LGBTI+ individuals still maintain the name of “honor” is also due to the fact that it is a name that fits their community’s struggle for existence. That is, “We are honored and not ashamed of our existence.” they mean.
