People have dreamed of living and even working in space for decades. But that wish has not been fulfilled since the golden age of the space race in the mid-20th century. Since the end of the Apollo program, humanity’s desire to seek life outside Earth has been limited to near-earth orbit. But that’s about to change, according to Howard Hu, NASA’s Orion Lunar spacecraft program manager.

NASA: In 10 years humans will be able to live and work on the Moon

“We will send people to the surface and they will live there and do science,” Hu told the BBC. said. The NASA employee predicts that humans will be able to live their entire lives on the Moon within ten years. But first, the Artemis program’s systems need to be proven to be secure.

“A historic day for human spaceflight,” Hu said on Wednesday, when the Artemis rocket carrying Orion was launched. Orion is currently about 134,000 km from the Moon. The 100-metre-high Artemis rocket was launched from Kennedy Space Center as part of Nasa’s mission to return astronauts to Earth’s satellite. Sitting atop the rocket, the Orion spacecraft was equipped for the first mission without a crew but with a dummy to record the effects of flight on the human body.

After Artemis’ departure, Hu said, “This is an incredible feeling and a dream. It’s our first step into long-term in-depth space exploration, not just for America, but for the world. And I think it’s a historic day for NASA, but also a historic day for anyone who loves human spaceflight and deep space exploration. We’re going back to the Moon, we’re working towards a sustainable program, and it’s the vehicle that will get the humans to land us back on the Moon.” said.

Hu said that if the current Artemis flight is successful, the next flight will be with a crew. In the third flight, the astronauts will have stepped back to the Moon after 50 years.
