Popular messaging app WhatsApp is about to stop working on millions of phones. People with one of the many older iPhone or Android models will not be able to use WhatsApp after December 31. The list includes some iPhone models, as well as Huawei, LG and Samsung models. The list of phones that will lose support for WhatsApp has 49 different models.
Users of these phones will receive an alert sent by WhatsApp before support ends.
“Devices and software change frequently, so we regularly review which operating systems we support and make updates,” WhatsApp said in a statement. The statement continues: “Devices that have been discontinued may not have the latest security updates or lack the functionality needed to run WhatsApp. To choose what to stop supporting, each year we, like other tech companies, choose which devices and software are how old and how old they are. We’re still looking at how many people are using it.”
