WhatsApp, the instant messaging application operating under the umbrella of Meta, announced the “Channels” feature a few months ago, which will add a new atmosphere to the application. The feature, which has been tested since then, allowed using WhatsApp as a social media platform.

The company announced today that it has started making this feature widely available. According to the statement, “Channels” will come to more than 150 countries in the next few weeks.

WhatsApp’s channels feature will allow you to follow people just like on social media platforms

The feature, which has a similar function to what we see in Telegram, allows you to follow people or organizations, just like in X (Twitter) or Threads. WhatsApp defines the channels that will be added to the application with a new tab as “a publishing tool through which administrators can send text, photos, videos, stickers or surveys in a one-way manner.”

From here we understand that only the administrator of the channel you follow can post. The platform states that the channels of artists, organizations, sports teams and much more will be included in the application.

It is also worth noting that the channels will be completely privacy oriented. None of the information, such as phone numbers, of users participating in the channels will be shared with others. At the same time, administrators’ information will remain completely confidential. Additionally, administrators will be able to decide who can follow channels and turn off forwarding screenshots or posts to others.
