According to rumors circulating backstage, Google may soon impose a limit on the size of WhatsApp backups available on its cloud storage service Google Drive. WhatsApp backups are currently not included in a user’s Google Drive capacity limit. However, a piece of code from the latest WhatsApp beta accessed by WABetaInfo suggests that this may not be the case for long.
In the new app, Google Drive will display a warning when a user approaches the WhatsApp backup size limit. However, it is not yet known what this limit will be. Google has yet to answer questions asked of it about this.
Google Drive’s move to cut off unlimited WhatsApp backups is actually not unexpected. Given the size of some WhatsApp chats and the amount of multimedia content people share, providing unlimited backups must certainly come at a significant cost to Google. In addition, by setting a limit on backup, it may be aimed to increase the number of users who may want to switch to Google’s paid services.
