The toxic and extremely hot air (it is thought that the temperature in the houses exceeded 300 degrees Celsius) as a result of the eruption of the volcano killed the people of Pompeii in a very short time. This extremely hot air burned people’s lungs, causing their muscles to contract. People, who were later covered with meters of ash, were rediscovered in 1775. Archaeologists began removing the corpses in the city into molds by pouring plaster from the holes. These tombs, which were in a form of mold thanks to the ashes that turned into a hard layer, showed us people who were petrified in the image of sculptures.
