The Egyptian Pyramids are structures that undoubtedly arouse everyone’s curiosity, with their gigantic dimensions, flawless geometry, ‘how did they do this’ questions, various conspiracies and thousands of years of history.

With their history dating back to 3500 – 4000 BC, the pyramids give us a lot of information about the culture and life of ancient Egypt. Pyramids, whose construction, connection with geometry and astronomy, and what goes on inside, continue to surprise us with every new discovery made as the boundaries of science and technology expand.

There are close to 150 pyramids discovered in Egypt

Although we know more about the most famous pyramids, the Pyramids of Giza, actually in Egypt until now Nearly 150 pyramids have been discovered. However, it is thought that there may be more pyramids that are deformed, buried under the desert sands or completely destroyed.

Pyramids are actually mausoleums built for pharaohs and their families. Pharaohs built pyramids for themselves and sometimes for their ancestors who died before they could complete their pyramid construction. ‘Burying the dead with their belongings in the grave’, which was practiced differently in many different cultures, also existed in Egypt. At the same time, it is thought that the pyramids may have been designed as a vehicle to lead the pharaohs to the gods. In ancient Egyptian belief, the pharaohs believed that they would join the gods in the ‘afterlife’.

The Egyptian pharaohs, who continued the tradition of building pyramids for about a thousand years, later abandoned this tradition. Although the reason for this is not known exactly, it is generally thought that the robbery of the tombs of the pharaohs in the pyramids may have pushed the pharaohs to this step.

There are pyramids in different parts of the world

Pyramids are not structures specific to Egyptian pharaohs. In fact, the Egyptians also inherited this colossal mausoleum tradition from the ziggurats, which were large rectangular temples rather than triangular ones built by the Sumerians.

These rectangular temples with a large terrace at the top were soon followed by the step pyramids by the Egyptians, and then the pyramids as we know them today were formed.

There are also pyramids in Bolivia and Mexico. At the same time, there are ‘tumuli’, which are pyramid-like structures on which stone blocks and soil are piled up, similarly built as king tombs in Anatolian lands.

So what’s inside the pyramids in Egypt?

Pyramids are actually mostly filled with stones. In other words, these structures were not built as an exterior and large empty spaces inside. But of course, considering that these structures were built as tools to raise the pharaohs to the level of the gods, there are also special things inside.

According to the information obtained so far, there are generally burial chambers and narrow corridors inside the pyramids. Inside the tomb chambers, it is thought that there was a lot of booty belonging to the pharaohs and their families in the past. However, these trophies have not survived to the present day because the rooms were robbed by treasure hunters over thousands of years.

At the same time, there were of course mummies of the deceased in the sarcophagi in the rooms. However, stepped pyramids, which are the first pyramid examples of much older dates, do not have burial chambers inside. For this reason, it is not known exactly what is inside these pyramids and for what purpose they were built.

All these things are found in the small parts of the giant pyramids. However, research indicates that there may be much more to the pyramids than these.

Barriers made of stone walls whose function cannot be understood, mysterious huge voids that cannot be solved, and stones with drawings on them…

Burial chambers inside the pyramids, trophies, mummies of the pharaohs And we mentioned that there are narrow corridors. However, until now we have not been able to find any definitive data on what exactly is inside a pyramid.

Of course, there are many scientists investigating what is inside these mysterious and fascinating structures. For example, a team used a special robot they developed after working on it for 5 years and found a partition hidden by a wall at the end of a narrow vent. Although it is not known why this partition behind the wall was built, what might be inside or why it was hidden by a wall, the study is proof that the pyramids are more complex and full of secrets than we thought.

The room in question was discovered in the Queen’s Chamber in the Pyramid of Cheops in 1872, but its end and purpose have been a great mystery ever since. In this structure, which looks like a narrow ventilation space, the special robot we mentioned before came across the wall after a 50-meter journey. The room behind the wall still remains a mystery.

In another study conducted in 2017, researchers made a groundbreaking discovery in the Cheops Pyramid with a method called muography. As a result of measurements made using muons, one of the fundamental particles of the universe, a large void was discovered above the King and Queen chambers in the Pyramid of Cheops.

Although we have no information on what this space, which is thought to be about 30 meters, as the large gallery area, is, why it is there, and what might be inside, the team conducting the research will continue to explore the inside of the pyramids using the same method.

The pyramid whose internal structure can be determined in the most detailed way, the most famous and largest pyramid, the Pyramid of Cheops

The Pyramid of Cheops, is a gigantic structure with a height of 145.75 meters. This pyramid, which is thought to have been built around 2550 BC, held the title of being the tallest man-made structure for about 3800 years until the beginning of the 20th century.

It is known that the Pyramid of Cheops, which is thought to have taken about 20 years to be built, was built for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu. The pyramid, which is one of the seven wonders of the world and the only structure still standing among these seven wonders, is also the pyramid we have the most information about what is inside.

Inside this pyramid are the entrance, the ‘great gallery’ which is a large area, and the king and queen rooms. Apart from these, as we mentioned above, there are also unsolved cavities, chambers and cavities that we cannot view. In other words, we don’t even know the pyramid that we know the most about…
