What is SpeedFan?
SpeedFan, the first version of which was developed by Alfredo Milani Comparetti in 2001, is a program with which you can measure the fan performance of your computer and make it run automatically. SpeedFan, whose stable version was released in 2016, works successfully even on the oldest Windows operating system versions.
The purpose of the SpeedFan program is to find out if you have the fan speed that provides the cooling your computer hardware needs while performing at full performance. Most of the time, computers don’t get very hot in standard use, but when running a powerful game or software, your computer gets pretty hot and needs cooling.
What does SpeedFan do?
The SpeedFan program first measures the performance of the fan, which is responsible for cooling your computer’s hardware. In most cases, the fans perform well, but when you are running powerful software or games, the fan may become underpowered and hardware temperatures may rise above 85 degrees Celsius. A temperature of 85 degrees and above is extremely dangerous.
At this point, another feature of the SpeedFan program comes into play, control. Thanks to its control system, SpeedFan provides the necessary cooling for your computer by the fan. Of course, all these arrangements are made according to the capacity of the fan. Even if you use SpeedFan, if you do not have a powerful fan to cool your hardware, the heating problem will continue.
How to use SpeedFan?

- Step #2: Click Configure.
- Step #3: Open the Advanced tab.
- Step #4: Select your hardware from the Chip menu.
- Step #5: Select your active fan indicated by SmartGuardian.
- Step #6: Select Set to option as Software controlled.
- Step #7: Save the settings with the OK button.
- Step #8: Confirm Automatic fan speed and let SpeedFan set the fan speed.
- Step #9: You can see the fan speed and system temperature on the Speeds tab.
If you want the fan speed, which provides the necessary cooling for your hardware, to be controlled by the SpeedFan program, you can follow the steps above. It is enough to make all these adjustments once in the SpeedFan program. Then the program will start to control the fan speed through all these adjustments.
The SpeedFan program can work in harmony with almost all fans, but we cannot say that it works completely. So if you don’t see your own fan in the Chip tab, don’t worry. Your fan may be showing with SmartGuardian in PMW settings in the same tab. It is also possible that your fan and the program are incompatible.
SpeedFan program has a simple working principle; It measures the system temperature and when it gets too hot, it tries to reduce this temperature by using the fan. If you are not running a software or game that will force your hardware, SpeedFan will not do anything special. Is SpeedFan safe?
There are no security complaints about the SpeedFan program so far. Therefore, it is possible to say that SpeedFan is safe. The most it can do is run your fan a little too much. You notice it and close the program.
The point where SpeedFan is just as dangerous as anything else you download from the internet can happen when you download the installation file from untrusted sources. So while you thought you downloaded the SpeedFan installation file, you may have downloaded other files that contain viruses or malware.
Should I use SpeedFan?
This is entirely at the discretion of the user. If you are satisfied with your fan performance and you have not encountered any problems with your system temperature so far, the SpeedFan program is not necessary. However, if you say that my fan is running but cannot even cool itself, things change.
