What is parallel reality?

Parallel reality is a new technology that allows one hundred or more people to simultaneously share a digital screen, sign or light, and each see something different. It may sound like science fiction, but it is a technology that has entered our lives right now. It is stated to be developed by scientists, engineers and designers with a history of transforming technology into incredible experiences.

Parallel Reality screens are visible to the naked eye and do not require special glasses. Imagine if thousands of people looking at the same screen at the same time could see their own entertainment, information, advertisements, directions or translations.

Parallel reality displays are powered by a new pixel with unprecedented capabilities. These pixels can reflect light rays of millions of different colors and brightness at the same time. Then each beam can be directed to a specific person with software. While the traditional pixel outputs only one color at any one time, the parallel reality pixel can simultaneously output millions of controllable light outputs of different colors and brightness.

Parallel reality usage areas

From changing the signs you see around you to creating entirely new experiences, the possibilities are endless. Can you imagine situations where screens, signs, signals and lights would be more effective by showing different things to different people and places at the same time? Here are some application areas:

  • Internationalization: Content is in every person’s language.
  • Marketing: Advertising is aimed at each person’s needs, interests, behaviors and environment.
  • Entertainment: In public entertainment venues, media, messaging and lighting effects are personalized for each person.
  • Direction finding: Directions are customized to each person’s destination.
  • Traffic signs and signals: Warnings and signals on the road are specific to each region, lane and vehicle.
  • Readability: Content is adjusted to each person’s distance, viewing angle, and sight lines.
  • People flow management: Each person is provided with an optimal exit or evacuation route.
  • Architectural lighting and effects: Lights and lighting effects are customized for each person.

We saw the parallel reality technology, which was first shown at CES 2020, in practice, at an airport in America recently. The technology has allowed nearly 100 passengers to view personal flight information tailored to their travels, simultaneously, on a single shared digital screen.
