There are cars that identify with our country not only with their design but also with their name. Especially in the 70s and 80s, we saw that the names of the cars on the roads were translated into Turkish. One of them, Murat 124s, was highly appreciated for its small structure and quality materials.
Years after the production of Murat 124s ended, Tofaş Serçe started to be produced based on the chassis of this vehicle. Although these two vehicles were very similar in appearance, they had many differences. Now we will look at the differences between these two tools.
Murat 124 was produced between 1971 – 1976.
Murat 124, made by Tofaş, started to be produced in 1971. Murat 124, of which 134 thousand 876 pieces were produced in total, was removed from the production line in 1976 with the start of production of the bird series. In 1984, this time Tofaş Sparrow started to be produced and in 1995 the production of this vehicle was stopped. In other words, there is a 24-year difference between the first produced ones of Murat 124 and the last ones of Serçe.
Although Murat 124 is older, it was a more detailed car than Serçe.
The Murat 124 is one of the cars that is known as “legend” even today. Although from a distance it seemed that there was not much difference between him and Sparrow, he actually had serious differences. The first difference that most people will notice when looking from the outside between these two cars is the headlight system. While Murat 124’s headlights were round, Serçe’s headlights were square.
Murat 124 had disc brakes on all four wheels, which is not found in every car even today.
On the other hand, Serçe had disc brakes on the front wheels and drums on the rear wheels.
Murat 124 had butterfly windows. Sparrow, on the other hand, did not have this feature.
Butterfly windows are the glasses used in the upper cars of a period and create a natural air conditioning effect on the car. Although the Murat 124 is an older model, these vehicles had butterfly windows.
The rims of Murat 124 were nailed and nickel-plated caps were attached.
Sparrow, on the other hand, did not have a nail rim.
There were also differences in the engines of the two vehicles.
Although the design of the two cars is similar, we have seen that there are important differences. One of them was the engines. Murat 124 had a 1197 cc engine producing 65 horsepower. This engine could accelerate the vehicle to 170 km/h. In addition, the vehicle was equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission.
On the other hand, the Sparrow had a 1297 cc engine capable of producing 65 horsepower. Serçe also had a 4-speed manual transmission.
Let’s move on to the conclusion: Which tool was better?
In fact, there is very little information available for either vehicle. However, according to the information we have obtained from both people who have driven the cars and some reliable sources, we see that the Murat 124 is one of the solid cars of its era.
Fiat 124, for which Murat 124 is licensed, is a car that won the European Car of the Year award in 1967. The Sparrow, on the other hand, is a car that was released much later and aimed to simplified the distinctive features of the Murat 124 and to be offered for sale at a cheaper price. We don’t see much of an original Murat 124 today.
