There were few surprises at last week’s Apple event: It was a traditional unveiling of the new iPhone, Watch and AirPods models we see every year, and we didn’t get to see much more.
We did not expect updates for other Apple products such as the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 and iPad Pro to be announced at this event, as it is rumored that Macs and iPads will be introduced at another Apple event in October. Apple products that do not (yet) have a regular update cycle, such as AirTags, the Mac Pro desktop, or the HomePod, could be seen at this launch. But there is no new information about them.
Now, let’s take a look at the products that Apple has not introduced, although it is possible to introduce it at the event…
Nothing About ‘Apple Reality’
Don’t expect to hear much from Apple until 2023 about the highly anticipated AR/VR headset, which is currently said to be called “Apple Reality”. Because at the event, the company was expected to give a hint or present some kind of progress report. Apple skipped this launch…
New iPad and iPad Pro
Apple normally doesn’t announce new iPad models in September. iPad Pros are usually released in October and more common models in the spring, but in 2021, Apple broke the mold in September 2021 and introduced a reworked iPad Mini and refreshed iPad. We waited to see if there would be a similar surprise at this event, but it didn’t…
Service Updates
In addition, at this launch, we did not see any updates for Apple’s Self-Service Repair program or subscription services such as Apple One, or any upcoming programs for Apple TV Plus, games for Apple Arcade. The company talked about the recyclability of the iPhone’s components, but that was all.
M2 Mac Mini and iMac
These desktops have yet to be updated to the M2 chips that Apple introduced earlier this year; The Mac Mini has remained the same since it was upgraded to M1 in November 2020, and for over a year the iMac is still sold with the M1 processor. We expect Apple to release news about desktop computers in October or May.
M2 Pro, Max, Ultra, and Other MacBook Pros
We’re still waiting for higher-powered versions of the M2, which launched earlier this year and are similar to the M1 variants (M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra) currently available in the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 and Mac Studio. Among other features, the M2 chips support more memory, which could be important for those who buy Pro hardware. October is also traditionally the time to release such systems, and M2-based versions of the laptops are said to be going into production soon.
Mac Pro and Pro Display
The Mac Pro is Apple’s last remaining Intel-based system. The current model was released in 2019 and has remained a fairly low-profile product in Apple’s portfolio, although configuration options have been revamped over time and new models have been rumored. The company briefly mentioned it’s working on a Mac Pro refresh at its event in March, but we expected to hear more at WWDC in June. But it didn’t.
Pro Display XDR was also released in 2019. It’s still a good screen, but screen technology has improved a lot in the meantime. These are also to be expected.
