OpenAI has warned that superhuman AI could arrive within a decade.

The artificial intelligence company, which took the whole internet by storm with ChatGPT, warned. The company said that superhuman artificial intelligence could arrive in ten years and the right thing must be done about it.

OpenAI: We Must Do the Right Thing

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, chief technology officer Greg Brockman, and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever recently wrote a blog post explaining their stance on the development and governance of superhuman artificial intelligence.

As the company is in a pioneering position in AI technologies as the current industry leader, they believe it may be riskier to try to maintain, rather than develop, superhuman AI.

The statements in the blog post drew attention:

“Given the picture we’re seeing right now, it’s conceivable that within the next ten years AI systems could surpass the level of expertise in most areas and be as productive as large corporations do.”

The potential for AI systems to reach the human level, or, as OpenAI warns, exceed expert-level human capabilities is a widely debated issue. Many experts argue that it is not inevitable that machines meet or exceed human cognitive abilities.
