Warning from Both Apple and Google about ‘Installing Applications from Outside the Store’

The sideloading feature, which some describe as freedom and others as a security vulnerability, became the focus of warnings from both Google and Apple.

Apple, which we know by either incorporating the industry’s standard features into its devices or bringing standards to the industry with its new features, used a charging standard called Lightning as we know in iPhones, but as a result of pressure from the European Union, it had to put it aside and switch to the type-C port.

A similar situation has put Apple in a difficult situation when it comes to where applications can and cannot be downloaded. It seems that the company, which only allows applications to be installed through the App Store, will have to allow sideloading, that is, installing applications from outside the official market.

Unfortunately, this issue is not just about making the user free.

On the subject, Apple’s security chief Ivan Krstić states that although many people focus on the freedom part, this can be a big problem in terms of user security. Because, according to Ivan, an application that users want or need to install may not be available in the App Store.

Therefore, different application markets or files that we may encounter may not meet Apple’s security standards. Craig Federighi, another executive at Apple other than Ivan, describes sideloading as “a cyber attacker’s best friend.”

Of course, Apple’s aim here is not to confront governments. The company aims to eliminate security concerns through collaboration while continuing to provide its services without risking user security.

We think “It should be just like Android”, but Google CEO Sundar Pichai also warned about the same thing.

In his statement during the lawsuit between the USA and Google, Sundar Pichai touched upon the dangers of installing applications through unofficial sources. Stating that unlike Apple, options are offered on the Android side and sideloading is allowed in this context, the CEO compared this situation to the seat belts in cars.

Moreover, although this option is offered, Pichai suggested that applications unconsciously installed from sources other than the Play Store will put your phone at risk, and especially unconscious casual users may not fully understand the seriousness of this issue. We know that there are security systems such as Play Protect in the official market.

There were claims that the feature would only be available on iPhones in the European region. We will be providing information as details become clear in the future.
