Volunteers Wanted to Listen to the Stars

A university in Belgium is looking for volunteer participants to listen to the stars to detect and classify them. It is estimated that by listening to the stars, it is possible to determine how powerful the human ear is in data analysis.

Just as people can distinguish a musical instrument from the sounds they make; Leuven University astronomers in Belgium announced that they are looking for volunteers to take part in the project for a study that will investigate whether the human ear can also distinguish the sounds made by the stars. Volunteers accepted to the project; will ‘listen’ to the stars to detect and classify them.

On the website created for the project called “AstroSounds”, it was noted that the science of astronomy is more than visual observation, and that the stars can make sounds like musical instruments with vibrations. Researcher astronomer Katrien Kolenberg from the University of Leuven stated that some stars vibrate and ring like giant bells, in sizes that the human ear cannot hear.

Stars have different properties that make them make different sounds.

Kolenberg said that these vibrations and resonances cause changes in the light coming from the stars; He stated that these changes can be transformed into audible sounds. Kolenberg noted that these tones can also be used to detect and classify stars.

On how to listen to the stars and what it will do, Kolenberg said, “Stars like the Sun are huge balls of gas. They have different properties that make different sounds.” .

The AstroSounds project, jointly led by Kolenberg and visually impaired researcher Wanda Diaz-Merced; Diaz-Merced’s doctoral study on hearing-based analysis of star data forms the core of the project.
