Volkswagen Golf is the leader in Europe, Tesla Model 3 is in the top 20

2021 has been a year of change for the European market, with the combination of the pandemic and the chip crisis. It was noteworthy that Model 3 was in the top 20 in total sales, while electric vehicles set a record.

Jato Dynamics shared 2021 data on passenger car sales in Europe (28 countries). Accordingly, total sales fell by 1.7 percent compared to 2020. In the statement, it was noted that 2021 will be remembered as a year full of ‘challenges’ and ‘changes’ for Europe.

Best-selling cars in Europe in 2021

Volkswagen Golf was the name that took the lead in sales in Europe in 2021. On the other hand, Golf became the model that lost the most blood, with a decrease of 27.9% compared to 2020. Peugeot 208 was in second place with 196,869 units, while Dacia Sandero was narrowly placed in third place with a growth of 16.9%. In addition, the 64% growth of Hyundai Tucson and Tesla Model 3 drew attention.

Tesla Model 3 continues to make the company smile in Europe. In 2021, it not only became Europe’s best-selling electric car, but also managed to find itself in the top 20 in total sales. Model 3, which is slightly behind Octavia, ranked above Peugeot 3008, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mercedes A-Class and BMW 3-Series in sales.

Electric vehicles on the rise

While the crisis in the automotive world caused great losses for some, there were also manufacturers who increased their market share by turning this situation into an opportunity. For example, Hyundai-Kia increased its market share by almost 2 percentage points to 8.6% with its competitive SUV and electric vehicle models. Likewise, Toyota increased its market share by 1.4 points. The name that brought this success to the Japanese manufacturer was the new Yaris.

PHEV (rechargeable hybrid) and all-electric vehicles also benefited from the chip crisis that affected the automotive world last year. “For most of the year, it was easier to buy an electric vehicle than a petrol one, due to shorter delivery times and incentives,” the statement said. The market share of these vehicles reached 19%. If we take into account that diesels have a share of 21.7%, it seems that electrics will surpass diesels in 2022.
