Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin commented on Ethereum layer 2 solutions.

Speaking at the ETSeoul event, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin believes ZK-Rollups will surpass Optimistic Rollups in Ethereum Layer 2 scaling.

Vitalik Buterin Believes ZK-Rollups Will Stand Out

Although Etheruem founder Buterin considers Optimistic Rollups to be more mature than ZK-Rollups, he believes the fundamentals of ZK-Rollups will allow it to stand out more in the long run.

Optimistic and ZK-Rollups are among the most recognized Tier-2 Solutions designed to scale Ethereum. However, there are various differences in the structure of these solutions and the level of security they provide.

According to Buterin, ZK-Rollups is much faster than other solutions when it comes to moving funds to and from the mainnet. This is a feature that will increase the adoption of ZK-Rollups.

Vitalik Buterin used the following statements on the subject:

“In my opinion, ZK-Rollups will eventually beat Optimistic Rollups in the long run. Because ZK-Rollups has many basic advantages over Optimistic Rollups.

I expect all rollups to be fully ZK based in over a decade.”

Buterin went on to say that ZK-Rollups is not mature yet.

“However, building ZK technology is quite difficult. There is a lot of mental challenge, especially in order to do all this safely and make sure that all the circuits are correct. Optimistic Rollups is just more mature.”

The main thing missing from ZK-Rollups is an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which makes it difficult to run decentralized applications like DeFi. EVM is the main processing unit on the Ethereum blockchain for decentralized applications.

However, it is worth remembering that ZK-Rollups carries out various studies for EVM compatibility. Other Tier-2 projects such as Scroll, zkSync and Polygon also plan to offer a computing environment called zk-EVM so that ZK-Rollups can run other general purpose smart contracts independently.

“We’re really starting to see zk-EVM applications almost ready to scale with Ethereum transactions. This is incredible”
